A baby shower is usually a couple of hours, mid-afternoon, with people standing, talking, and picking at a table. Nobody wants a full plated slice of cake in that setting. Dessert that works at a shower is small, varied, and easy to eat one-handed.
The dessert table approach
Two or three things beats one big thing. A spread reads as generous, gives guests a choice, and photographs far better than a single cake on an otherwise empty table. A reliable combination:
- Cupcakes — $30 per dozen, or $35 for specialty flavors. Individually portioned, no plates or forks needed, and they can be decorated to whatever theme or palette you've chosen.
- Chocolate-dipped strawberries — $18 per half-dozen. The thing everyone photographs, and the easiest way to make a table look expensive.
- Chocolate chip cookies — $18 per dozen. The unglamorous item that always disappears first.
- Fudgy brownies — $20 per half-dozen, cut small for a dessert table.
If you want a cake too
A small custom cake as the centerpiece, surrounded by the spread above, is the classic setup. It gives you the cutting moment and the photo without needing to feed the whole room from one cake. Custom celebration cakes start at $70, and a 6-inch round serving about 12 is plenty when there are other desserts out.
Quantity rule of thumb: for a shower with a dessert spread, plan on about two small items per guest total across everything — not two of each. A 20-person shower is comfortably covered by two dozen cupcakes plus a dozen cookies and a half-dozen strawberries.
Gender reveals
If the reveal is happening through the dessert, the logistics matter more than the flavor. Cupcakes with colored filling inside work well and let everyone bite at once. A cake with a tinted interior works too, and puts the moment on whoever cuts it.
Either way, the important part is the handoff: someone other than the parents-to-be needs to be the one who tells Kelsey the color, and that person needs to be reliable. It's worth choosing them deliberately.
Themes and palettes
Showers usually have a palette before they have a theme. Bring the colors, an inspiration photo, or a link to your invitations, and the desserts can be matched to them — florals, simple two-tone buttercream, animals, or whatever the nursery is doing.
Timing
Cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and strawberries need 24 to 48 hours notice. A custom cake needs about a week. Showers get scheduled well in advance, so this is one of the easier events to order for on time — the trap is remembering the desserts three days out because everything else was handled months ago.
