Cupcakes or Cake?
How to Decide

It comes down to four things: how you're serving, how many people, what you want photographed, and whether anyone is willing to cut and plate dessert for a crowd.

People usually arrive at this question with a preference already and want permission to go with it. Here's the honest breakdown either way.

Choose cupcakes when…

  • Nobody wants to cut and serve. This is the real argument. Someone has to cut a cake, plate it, and hand it out — usually the host, usually at the exact moment they're busiest. Cupcakes eliminate that job entirely.
  • People are standing and mingling. Showers, open houses, office parties, graduation drop-ins. One hand, no fork.
  • You want variety. Multiple flavors across a dozen is easy; a single cake is one decision for everybody.
  • Portion control matters — kids' parties especially.
  • No plates, forks, or cleanup. Genuinely underrated.

Choose a cake when…

  • There's a moment. Candles, singing, cutting together, the first-anniversary top tier. A cake is a centerpiece and an event; cupcakes are dessert.
  • You want a showpiece — sculpted, themed, tiered, or a specific design from an inspiration photo. Cake gives a decorator a canvas.
  • It's a formal, seated event where dessert is being served to people at tables.
  • The photos matter most. A cake photographs as the subject of the party. Cupcakes photograph as a nice table.

On cost: they're closer than people assume. Signature and classic cupcakes are $30 per dozen, so 36 cupcakes for a 36-person party is $90. A custom celebration cake starts at $70 and scales with size and design. Neither is reliably the cheap option — it depends on headcount and how elaborate the design gets.

The hybrid, which is what most people want

A small cake for the cutting moment and the photos, plus cupcakes for everyone to actually eat. You get the centerpiece, the candles, and the picture, and nobody has to plate dessert for forty people.

This is also how the first-birthday smash cake set works — a small cake for the baby, cupcakes for the guests — and the same logic applies at any age.

A quick way to decide

Ask yourself one question: is there a moment where everyone stops and looks at the dessert?

If yes — candles, a song, a reveal, a cutting — you want a cake, even a small one. If no, and dessert is just something people pick up off a table, cupcakes will serve you better and save you a job.
