1. Servings, first and foremost
Cake is priced by how much cake there is. A two-tier cake for 40 guests and a four-tier cake for 150 are different amounts of butter, flour, time, and structural work. Before you shop for quotes, get your guest count as close to final as you can — it's the single number that moves the price most.
2. Design complexity
This is where two cakes of identical size can differ by hundreds of dollars. Smooth buttercream with fresh florals is quicker than hand-piped lacework, sugar flowers, or sharp-edged fondant tiers. None of it is better or worse — a clean buttercream cake with greenery is stunning and photographs beautifully — but detail is hours, and hours are cost.
3. Flavors and dietary needs
Standard flavors are included in your quote. Gluten-free cake flavors are available on request for an additional charge, since they use different ingredients and a separate process. If you need a GF tier or a GF option for particular guests, mention it in your first message so it's in the quote from the start.
4. Delivery and setup
A tiered cake should not ride in a friend's back seat over the Berkshire hills. Delivery is available across the Berkshires, Western Mass, Eastern New York, Southern Vermont, and Northwest Connecticut — roughly a one to two hour radius from Pittsfield — and the fee varies with distance. Venues further out cost more to reach.
The deposit: a 50% deposit is due at booking to hold your date, with the balance due before the wedding. That's standard for custom work — it reserves a specific day that can't be resold if plans change.

If you'd rather your dessert be the entertainment, the Build-Your-Own Cake Bar is a fully styled station where guests build their own slice — pick a cake flavor, a frosting, a drizzle, and toppings. Wedding packages are priced as complete experiences:
- The Signature — $1,100. Three cake flavors, three frostings, two drizzles, nine toppings, and 2.5 hours of service at a styled table with fresh greens and florals.
- The Luxe — $1,450. The most-booked package: four flavors, four frostings, three drizzles, unlimited toppings, 3.5 hours of service.
- The Ultimate — $1,950. Five flavors, five frostings, unlimited toppings, plus 1.5 hours of late-night snack service for the back half of the reception.
These are a different category from a cutting cake — you're paying for dessert for the whole room plus staffed service and styling, not just the cake itself. Couples who want a memorable dessert moment tend to land here.
Four honest ways to spend less
No baker minds a budget-conscious couple. These are the levers that genuinely work:
- Simplify the design, not the size. Ask what a "simplified" version of your inspiration photo would cost. Swapping intricate piping for clean buttercream and fresh flowers often keeps 90% of the look for meaningfully less.
- Go smaller on the display cake. A gorgeous two-tier cake for photos and the cutting ceremony, backed by a dessert table of cupcakes, cookies, or brownies, feeds the same room for less than a towering four-tier.
- Skip the extra tier you don't need. Couples routinely over-order. Not every guest takes cake, especially when there are other desserts out.
